Packaging is often reviewed only after damage claims rise, but it should be treated as an operating lever. Poor packaging choices affect volumetric weight, trailer utilization, handling speed, and the likelihood of damage during transfers and final-mile delivery.
A small KPI set can make packaging performance far easier to manage. Teams should look at damage incidence, packaging cost per shipment, cube utilization, repack frequency, and returns caused by handling or protection issues.
